History of the Trinidad & Tobago Scrabble Association

The T&T Scrabble Association(TTSA) was founded and incorporated on  7th,June 1985 by Robin  Krishna Thomas John and Arlette Frederick. Robin John had prior  to then founded and managed the Arima Scrabble Club while Arlette Frederick presided over the very popular Southern Scrabble Club.These two individuals  together with Adrian Franklin and Albert Stewart  members of the Happy Hour Scrabble Club united their organizations (clubs) to form the foundation  of what is today the TTSA.  The Management  Committee liaised with and received support from Goellnicht & Stollmeyer Co. Ltd who was the local franchise holder for the game of scrabble in TnT and with  the help of that company created the National Scrabble Championship Tournament (1984) and the National Secondary Schools' Scrabble Championship tournament (1986).

The TTSA was registered with the three Ministeries responsible for Sport, Education and Community Development. It received international recognition as the governing body for Scrabble in Trinidad & Tobago from J.W Spear & Sons PLC (UK), the North American Scrabble Association and the Australian & New Zealand Scrabble Associations. Also in 1984 the TTSA was responsible for the staging of the Inaugural National Open Scrabble Championship and the Guardian Neediest Cases Scrabble Tournament.

Over the Years the TTSA has undergone a number of changes. Presently, the membership comprises of affiliated clubs of Trinidad & Tobago as outlined in the Association's constitution. The TTSA'S programme of events has been broadened to include an annual Inter-Club League and Knockout Tournament as well as a Master's Tournament. A biennial tournament was also held with the Guyana Assoc. of Scrabble Players (GASP) with effect from 1998. In 2004, however with the inclusion of the Barbados Scrabble Association (BSA),the TTSA hosted  the first Caribbean Team Scrabble Tournament.This initial tournament was won by Trinidad & Tobago. TnT successfully defended this title in 2006 at  the 2nd Caribbean Team Championship held in Guyana. The Barbados team placed 2nd. A Caribbean Individual Champion title was also launched in Guyana which was won by Edward Metivier (TnT),in 2nd place was Kurt Ross (TnT) and  in 3rd place was Orlet Bollock (Barbados).
